Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand’s capital, is a place very different to its boisterous cousin, Bangkok. Here, you’ll find temples next to convenience stores, and away from the main streets you’ll discover a much more peaceful slice of Thai-ness. The city also acts as a jumping off point to visit the very north of the country, an area known as the Golden Triangle, and to meet the hilltribes who call this area home.

On arrival to Chiang Mai, you’ll first have an afternoon to yourself where you can explore the charming city. The following day, it’s on to one of the most famous sights, located just outside the city – the Doi Suthep Temple, sat on top of a hill and 300 steps up. From the top of the hill, you’ll be able to appreciate the views over the city as well as the surrounding countryside.

On the way back down, you’ll also call in at one of the hill tribes that the area is famous for, the Meo Hill Tribe, known for their embroidered clothing. You’ll have another afternoon free at leisure to relax – perhaps choose to explore some more of Chiang Mai’s temples or just to grab a bowl of their most renowned noodles, Kao Soi.

The following day, you’ll set off on a full day trip to the Golden Triangle, the area where three countries – Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, all meet. It was also once the world’s largest producer of opium. On your way, you’ll see the Mae Kajan Hot Springs, take a trip into Myanmar’s border tour, Tachileik for a spot of shopping, and on the way back visit more of Northern Thailand’s hill tribes, this time the Akha hill tribe and the Yao tribe, before heading back to Chiang Mai.

You’ll have one more day at leisure in this peaceful city before flying home – you could choose to take another tour out of the city to see the long-neck tribe, try your hand at a cookery class or simply indulge in some more shopping for some of Thailand’s finest handicrafts.
