Chiang Mai was once the capital of the ancient Lanna kingdom and as a result, has a strong culture unlike anything you might encounter in the country’s capital, Bangkok. From ancient temples to training centres for Thai massage, Northern Thai cuisine to the unique traditions of the hilltribes who call Northern Thailand home, the city certainly has a lot going on to keep any traveller busy.

Enjoy an afternoon on your own to explore Chiang Mai on arrival – perhaps check out some of the many temples that line the central area of the city, or simply relax in the strong hands of a Thai masseuse! In the evening, you’ll enjoy a special Khantoke dinner – a Northern Thai tradition of dining around low, round tables, whilst you watch distinctive dances from hilltribes.

The next day is a special one for all those who love Thai food – a Thai cooking class! Your patient chef will show you how to create the unique tastes of Thai cuisine as you learn to cook four Thai dishes – and to enjoy them afterwards, of course!

Your last full day in Chiang Mai is something different, allowing you to get off the beaten track and escape into the lush countryside as you cycle around Lamphun, one of the oldest cities in Thailand, and the nearby river. You’ll enjoy a yummy lunch, explore small temples and get to know the friendly locals – an experience which would be hard to create on your own and will just reinforce your perception of what a friendly bunch the Thais truly are.
