Iceland is one of the easiest places in the world to see the Northern Lights – just drive (or sail) out from Reykjavik and thanks to the sparsely populated country, so long as the skies are clear you’re likely to spot the Aurora Borealis dancing above.

On arrival to Reykjavik (pronounced Rey-kee-ya-vik if you’re unsure), Iceland’s capital city, you’ll start your trip with some free time to explore the city and acclimatise to the cold. The following morning, you’ll head out on a shared morning tour to explore the city and its surrounding area – you’ll see landmarks such as the Old Town, Perlan Glass Dome, Höfði house, Hafnarfjörður and Hallgrim’s church.

After an afternoon to relax, this evening you’ll start the hunt for the elusive Northern Lights! Drive out into the wilderness, where your experienced guide will use their knowledge of weather forecasts to try to get you at the perfect spot for some Aurora Borealis viewing.

The following day you’ll have to yourself until the evening, when it’s time for another Northern Lights excursion – this time, a Northern Lights cruise, sailing around Iceland’s waters to see the lights from a different perspective.

Then get out to discover Iceland’s natural landmarks and take the famous Golden Circle route, a loop of the southern coast that will bring you to the frozen waterfall, Gullfoss, Þingvellir National Park and the Geysir geothermal area. After a couple of hours to grab some dinner, you’ll head out on your final Northern Lights adventure – this time a deluxe, extended version of eight hours. If you don’t spot the Northern Lights on this tour, you’ll be offered another tour free of charge, so you can try the following night!

You’ll have one last day to yourself to pick up some souvenirs for loved ones back home, or perhaps even enjoy a quick trip to the Blue Lagoon and relax in the steamy waters, before flying home.
